Mizo Parliamentarian Alleges Racism & Discrimination

Aizawl, Nov 10
: Lalhmingliana, the lone Rajya Sabha member from Mizoram today claimed he had faced racist and discriminatory attitudes at many places in the country even after being elected to Parliament for two terms.

“I have been often asked if I am a Chinese, Korean or Japanese and some people refused to believe that I am an Indian,” the journalist-turned politician told reporters here.

He, however, said he was never a victim of racism in Parliament, but felt so where people did not know that he was an MP.

He said the Constitution accepts people from the northeast as Indians and that was good enough.

Lalhmingliana, who recently visited Mongolia and attended a conference on ‘Parliamentarian on the Field’, said that the people there had made him feel more at home than in some parts in India.
