Dear All,
On behalf of the Secretariat of the Human Rights Council, please be informed that, at its sixteenth session (28 February - 25 March 2011), the Council will be expected to proceed to the appointment of five members of the Human Rights Council Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
The consultative group established further to paragraph 47 of Council resolution 5/1 is mandated to propose to the President of the Council, one month prior to the Council's sixteenth session, a list of candidates for upcoming vacancies of mandates. By its decision 6/102 of 27 September 2007, the Council approved technical and objective requirements for eligible candidates.
As stipulated in Council resolution 6/36 establishing the Expert Mechanism as the subsidiary body providing the Council with thematic expertise on the rights of indigenous peoples, the Council is strongly recommended to give due regard to experts of indigenous origin in the selection and appointment process.
In line with paragraph 42 of the Council resolution 5/1, the following entities may nominate candidates to the Expert Mechanism: (a) Governments, (b) Regional Groups operating within the United Nations human rights system, (c) international organizations or their offices (e.g. the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights), (d) non-governmental organizations, (e) other human rights bodies, and (f) individuals.
