Aizawl, Mar 26,2012 : Mizoram Assembly today rejected a private resolution moved by Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) member K Liantlinga, seeking compensation for deposed Mizo chiefs.
In his resolution, Liantlinga urged the state government to pressurize the Centre on the the issue of giving compensation to the descendants of 309 Mizo chiefs deposed in 1950s by the then state government of Assam.
He said the Mizo chiefs were deposed by the Assam government without payment of compensation for the land they then owned under the Assam Lushai Hills District Acquisition of Chief’s Rights Act, 1954.
Ruling Congress members opposed the resolution on the ground that the state government had taken up the issue and also that the land in Mizoram belonged to the former chiefs and common people of the state and no compensation was needed from the Centre.
The resolution was rejected by a voice vote.
