In two years, natural calamities kill 45 people in Mizoram

Aizawl, April 17(NNN): In the past two years in Mizoram at least 45 people have died due to various types of natural disasters or calamities over the last two years with landslides claiming the highest toll at 27. According to Statistical Handbook of Mizoram 2018 released recently, 17 people have died due to natural calamities during 2017-2018. Of the 17 people died during 2017-2018, 11 people were killed in landslides, 2 due to cyclones, 3 due to flood, while lightening claimed 1 life, the report said.

The handbook said that, during 2016-2017, landslide has killed 16 people and 7 people died due to flood, 3 people died due to lightning and one each by cyclone and fire.   The entire state was affected by various types of natural calamities in the past two years. 
 
At least 208 villages were affected by flood, damaging more than 740 houses of which 130 were completely damaged and 603 partially damaged during 2017-2018. 558 houses in 200 villages were destroyed by cyclone, while landslide occurred in 174 villages, causing damage to 267 dwelling houses. 67 houses were gutted by fire in 146 villages during the same period. Altogether 811 villages across the state have been affected and about 1,800 houses destroyed by various types of natural disasters during 2017-2018, the report said.
