Eviction of Indigenous People

Tension is prevailing at Shiallor village under Haripur upazila here as a group of people led by local influential people prevented the indigenous people from building houses on their ancestral land on Thursday.

They also forced the indigenous people to postpone a meeting which was scheduled to be held at the village protesting vandalism on indigenous people's houses on November 26 in a bid to evict them illegally.

They encircled Jatiya Adivasi Parishad leaders, including its central President Anil Marandi, Adviser of District Adivasi unit Samsuzzoha Bablu and Ahasanul Habib Babu.

Later, the leaders left the spot under police protection.

Haripur unit President of Jatiya Adivasi Parishad Soniram Hemrom said on November 26, a group of people numbering 40-50 led by Abdul Alim attacked ransacked 17 houses in an attempt to illegally evict indigenous people.

At least five indigenous people, including women, were critically injured in the attack.

Earlier in the morning, Karitash, a non-government organisation, and Catholic Mission jointly organised a 'Peace gathering' there and distributed corrugated iron sheets among the affected indigenous people for rebuilding their houses.
