Aizawl, Mar 30 : Mizoram chief minister Lal Thanhawla today graced the launching of Panchayat Mahila Shakti Abhiyan (PMSA) in Aizawl. Speaking on the occasion Lal Thanhawla asserted the importance of women in the society for making better social life and thereby playing crucial role in the administration of the state. He said, “The central government’s aim is not only to uplift and strengthen the position of women, but it targets that women can take more active role in various departments besides legislative assembly and other political status so that women along with their male counterparts could work side by side in the near future for the service of the nation”.
The chief minister also informed the packed gathering that after long debate, Women Reservation Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha and hoped that the bill will also be passed in the Lok Sabha. Stating the process of election in Mizoram, Lal Thanhawla said that when there is any election in the state, people usually vote for the male candidates that makes things difference.
Keeping in view of uplifting and strengthening the position of women, the Congress party in Mizoram has reserved 33% for women in the upcoming Municipal Council election, the chief minister said. Dr. Lalhnehzovi, Reader, Mizoram University said that Panchayat Mahila Shakti Abhiyan (PMSA) scheme is meant for the Elected Women Representatives (EWRs) to build their confidence and capacity so that they get over the institutional, societal and political constraints that prevent them from active participation in rural local self government.
