Seminar on indigenous people in Mizoram

4 September 2009: A seminar on ‘International Mechanism and Indigenous People’s Issues and the Asia Indigenous People’s Pact’ was held in Aizawl city, Mizoram state, India two days ago.

At the seminar, Dr. Shwe Khar, Chairperson of the Thailand based Asia Indigenous People’s Pact said the United Nation Organization (UNO) will handle the issue of indigenous people’s and explain the regulations and guidelines.

The seminar was organized by Zo Indigenous Forum and the Asia Indigenous People’s Pact. It is the first time that such a seminar was held in Mizoram.

Mr. Lalremruata, Director of Zo Indigenous Forum told Khonumthung News that “we have not yet seen awareness of the indigenous people’s issue among youth groups. We have to make them aware so that they come to know more about it and strengthen the Forum. That is the main purpose of the seminar in Mizoram.

The Zo Indigenous Forum was established on 12 February 2009 by a Mizoram youth group in order to reunite all Mizo ethic groups with the help of the United Nations Organization. -
