ADB finance project volates indigenous peoples rights in north east india

Guwahati, 11 December 2016: Sub-regional training for engagement with Asia Development Bank for the rights of Indigenous Peoples in relation with North East State Roads Improvement Project (NESRIP) organised by Zo Indigenous Forum with the support of Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP).

Land owners from Mizoram and Manipur who were affected by the NESRIP project has shared their experiences, challenges and how the implementing agencies were violating the ADB Safeguard Policy statement (SPS) 2009 were also shared.

According to the research done on Thoubal - Kassom Khullen and Thenzawl to Buraprui road financd by Asia Deveopmen Bank (ADB) under the NESRIP it was found out that there was lack of consultation and lack of adequate information, lack of meaningful consultations, consent of the indigenous peopels was not obtained for relocation, Lack of fair and just compensation and Ineffective grievance redress mechanism.
