New Delhi, April 17: Home minister P. Chidambaram today announced that candidates aspiring to join the central armed police forces from Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur can write their recruitment exams in Bengali, Mizo and Meitei.
“We have issued orders asking the Staff Selection Commission (SSC), which is holding the examinations, that candidates from Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura should be allowed to write the exam in Mizo, Manipuri and Bengali languages, respectively,” he said.
Bengali, spoken by the majority in Tripura, and Meitei, spoken by most in the Manipur valley, are already on the list of 22 languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. This means papers are in any case set in these languages. Only Mizo is not part of the Schedule. It is written in the Roman script.
